I have a "Magic 30" Hard disk drive that I've been using with no problems with System 3.2 since last August. I just tried to update to System 4.1, but when I booted 4.1 off of a floppy I got a message "Unable to read drive, Initialize?" refering to the hard disk. If I run "Disk First Aid", under 4.1, on the drive it normally says "Disk cannot be read" but occasionally says "verifying disk" for long enough to read a sector or so and then goes back to "cannot be read". My assumption is that there is some sort of a timing problem in the driver on the Magic 30 which is incompatable with the current SCSI driver. If I boot 3.2 off the drive it continues to work fine. Before I try to get hold of the company that sells the thing I wanted to ask the net a couple things 1) Has anyone out there encountered and solved this problem? 2) Is there any chance of my being able to use the Apple HD20SC initializer to write a working driver onto the drive? The controller seems to be an ADAPTEC ACB 4070 (?) and has PROMs reading ADAPTEC INC 400138-00 C (c) 1984 Thanks, Dan Tappan tappan@bbn.com ..!harvard!bbn!tappan
