[comp.sys.mac] Status of comp.{binaries,sources}.mac newsgroups

bytebug@felix.UUCP (Roger L. Long) (07/11/87)

First of all, an apology... Posting has been interrupted the past
several days because my trusty Mac once again decided to go on
vacation. This time I was getting all kinds of bizarre behavior, and I
finally got tired enough of it to take my Mac back to the shop I had
replace the analog board back in April. (Remember that fun? The
flyback blew a few days before my wedding and all my records were on
Mac floppies?)

Since the 90 day warranty on the analog board was almost up, I figured
that we'd take it back and see if it was flakey or what was wrong.
Problem was, that after running Apple diagnostics for 24 hours, my Mac
was still running fine. I went back to the shop with two applications
that seemed to bomb often enough that I might be able to reproduce the
problem. Still I couldn't make it crash. Okay, so maybe something was
loose and the car trip shook things back into place. I brought my mac
back home and within ONE HOUR of MacTerminal use, I was again listening
to my Mac make strange noises and looking at a black screen.

So the next day I go back to the shop, where they offer to go ahead and
replace the power supply, but saying that my logic board was probably
had a bad memory chip (that's what diagnostics are for, aren't they)
and that should probably be replace, too. Oh well, let's go for it,
but instead of just replacing, why not go ahead and upgrade it to a
Mac Plus logic board (I had done the ROM upgrade in April).

Thus, here I am. I've been using MacTermial to upload and download
things last night and again this morning, and things are still running.
I ran the memory diagnostic (that I posted to comp.binaries.mac awhile
back) all night, and so it seems that I'm back on the air.

So, what does all of this have to do with comp.{binaries,sources}.mac?
Well, things will start going out again. But I'm fast tiring of resending
postings to people to replace those lost or mangled my Usenet. Not to
mention tired of the added phone costs to do this. A couple of months
ago I asked for people to support these groups by volunteering to poll
and pick up these newsgroups directly. If enough well-connected sites
were to do this, perhaps fewer messages would be lost or mangled. I
just don't have the energy or the time to do the job I get paid for,
moderate these groups *AND* try to track down problems with the net and
email missing postings.

Thus, if you're having problems receiving comp.{binaries,sources}.mac
and are missing parts of postings or the binaries aren't checksumming,
what you need to do before you contact me is to see if you can figure
out where the problems are. There's no way that I can guarantee that
what I post will make it to your favorite Usenet machine intact. And
if you do contact me for a replacement, please be patient; I'll try to
get to it as soon as possible.

And I'm still looking for sites that are willing to poll me to pick up
postings directly. If any of you can suggest changes that will improve
these groups, let me know.

Thanks.
