[comp.sys.mac] Screen snapshot ROM bug not fixed

mjsamorodny@thunder.UUCP (07/11/87)

I have been using System 4.1/Finder 5.5 on a Mac SE for a few weeks now
and I have a major complaint against Apple.

You will remember when the 128K ROMs came out that the familiar
command-shift-3 screen snapshot would no longer work with a menu pulled
down (or anything where the mouse button was held down).
Apple admitted this was a bug in the ROM and released a patch for this
problem.

Now comes another new (256K) ROM, AND THE BUG IS STILL THERE!!!
This is inexcusable. At the very least, the patch should have been
incorporated in the new System software, but it is not. I have read
on this net that the old patch will no longer work.

In simple language, this stinks. I now use the PD DA Camera to do
screenshots, but the version I have is pre-HFS and puts all dump
documents in the System Folder instead of the main window so I have to
fish them out.

I ask the Apple people who read this newsgroup to explain why the
bug has persisted through a ROM change and two System releases,
and what, if anything, is going to be done about it?

You call it a "bug". I believe the change was an undesirable
but unavoidable side-effect of fixing another problem. In particular,
I believe GetNextEvent will not call an FKEY while there is data
being saved under the menu.

Apple has distributed an Installer patch (which I can't lay
my hands on at the minute) to provide the capability you want,
but note that they do not recommend you use it on a standard system
disk, and NEVER on a hard disk.

All in all, since Camera does a reasonable job I don't think it's
worth getting worked up about. I did all the snapshots for my book
using Camera.
