Summary: Bug in Hard Disk SC Drivers???
Here's what's been happening:
I talked to Al Whipple of ALSoft -- he's one of the coauthors
of DiskExpress. He said that when the hard disk was initialized, any
damage that may have been done by DiskExpress was wiped out. He
proposed that there might be some problem with the disk drive hardware;
since one worked, and three didn't, perhaps the one was using different
hardware. No go. All four hard drives use Seagate ST225N mechanisms.
Finally, just for grins, I dug out my original Hard Disk 20SC Installation
disk, which had version 1.0 of the disk drivers, and initialized my hard
disk with that program.
Voila! It Worked!! So as a test, I used HD SC Setup version 1.4 to
update the drivers. BOOM! The Mac II trahsed the hard drive. So
I reinitialize with 1.0 again, andit works!
So for now, I'm using the old old drivers with muy hard disk. They
may not be the best ones, but at least they work.
If one of the Apple employees who follows this newsgroup (not that
I *didn't* say "Apple Reps" :-)) could kindly ask some
questions, and perhaps try to reproduce the problem, I'
d appreciate it very much. I suspect that there's a problem
with the drivers version 1.3 and 1.4 when used with the Apple HD 20SC
externl hard drive.
Here's the configuration again:
Macintosh II
1MB memory
1 internal floppy disk
*no* internal hard disk.
Apple video card, Monochrome monitor (als Apple)
System v4.1
When the disk was initialized with HD SC Setup version 1.3 or 1.4, the
Mac II would destroy the directory with no provocation whatsoever --
just boot with the hard disk, then reboot, and the hard disk's director
has been destroyed. If I reinitialize with version 1.0, then the
disk works perfectly.
Note that the disk works fine with a Mac Plus with *any* of the above
drivers.
And that's an Apple Hard Disk 20SC, using the Seagate ST-225N mechanism.

I would note that this is roughly akin to what the Jasmine
folks claimed. They said that their drive does not now work
on the Mac II because "Apple changed things at the list minute",
referring to the SCSI manager.
They specificially recommended using HD Setup 1.1, that was a
known way to get their drive to work. They are hard at work
on getting drivers that will run on all machines, and estimate
about 45 days.
