Articles in Byte, MacUser, etc. all claim that the Mac II can be upgraded to 8 MB on the motherboard by installing 1 Meg chips. BUT the local dealer has never heard of this, and the "offical Apple Rep, just in from the West Coast" says that he "strongly discourages" any such notion. Huh? (Apparently he believes that Bell Labs lacks the technical capability :-) SO: what is the true story? What spec. chips are needed? Anyone done this? I'd really appreciate an answer from APPLE. (It's hard enough to "infiltrate" macs into the lab, without problems in getting basic technical information.) Huh? (Apparently he believes .. > the true story? What spec. chips are needed? Anyone done this?> -- > ---- Henry Kautz There may be some confusion because of terminology...to upgrade to 8 Megs you replace the existing set of 4 SIMM modules (which are populated with 256K DRAM chips) with a new set of 4 SIMM modules populated with 1Mbit DRAM chips. This takes you to 4 Mbytes of memory. You then add another 4 1Mbit SIMM modules to the remaining SIMM slots on the motherboard and you have a total of 8M of memory. I don't believe it is easy to replace the 256K chips ON the simm modules with 1 Mbit chips...that may be what your dealer/rep were warning about. In any case Apple's official solution is definately to buy new SIMMs to plug into the SIMM slots on the motherboard. If you do upgrade to 8M you are left with the original 1M of memory which you might find a buyer for since it can be used to upgrade a stock MacII up to 2M. Huh? The following is from AppleLink "Apple and 3rd Party Products" technical library on AppleLink. Show it to your rep or dealer. --------------------- Apple 1MB and 2MB Memory Expansion Kits With the Apple 1MB and 2MB Memory Expansion Kits, users can expand their Macintosh CPUs' memory and maintain larger files. SIMMS, or Single In-line Memory Modules, are plug-in RAM expansion strips that are configured with up to eight RAM chips in either 256 kilobyte or one megabyte configurations. Up to eight of these modules can be snapped into the Macintosh II computer's motherboard, allowing memory expansion options of 2MB, 5MB, and 8MB. Up to four modules can be installed in the Macintosh Plus and Macintosh SE, bringing the configuration up to 2.5MB or 4 MB. The 1 MB Memory Expansion Kit consists of four 256K SIMM strips, allowing Macintosh II users to expand the RAM from the Macintosh II's standard 1MB to 2MB. The 2MB Memory Expansion Kit consists of two 1MB SIMM strips, allowing Macintosh SE or Macintosh Plus users to expand the RAM from the standard one megabyte of memory to 2.5 or 4MB of RAM. Since Macintosh II memory must be upgraded four SIMMs at a time, Macintosh II users may purchase two or four of the 2MB Memory expansion kits to expand from 1MB to 5MB to 8MB of RAM respectively. Apple's 1MB and 2MB Memory Expansion Kits will be available for ordering in April, 1987. Apple 1MB Memory Expansion Kit (M0218) Apple 2MB Memory Expansion Kit (M0219) ------------------------- Unfortunately, I do not have a suggested retail price list handy (it would take half an hour to download from AppleLink!). Ask your dealer for pricing.
