Does anyone have experience with using any one of the HP laser printers to print Post Script formatted files produced by Mac II software? I have heard a rumour that Hewlett Packard has made the software and hardware modifications to imitate an Apple Laserwriter but HP Sales up here in the frozen north of Canada are not informed of this new capability. I'd appreciate receiving any details. Kevin J. Keen Dept. of Statistics University of Toronto Toronto, CANADA M5S 1A! e-mail address: kevink@utstat P. S. Don't believe all that frozen north stuff in the Molson's and Labatt's beer ads. Today it is 34C in Toronto with a relative humidity of 85%.

The HP Lazerjet is a good printer for letter quality work but is not a compatable postscript device. It can print off bit mapped files but does not understand the Postscript language. QMS, markets an add-on device to the Lazerjet that replaces HP's controller with a Postscript controller but costs about $3000. HP has announced that future printers will support PostScript. It doesn't apply to the curren LaserJet II and -- I don't recall exactly -- it may be that HP is satisfied having third parties like QMS provide the PS capability. -- Joel West, Palomar Software, Inc. Some say its rumor, some say its announced. Me, I don't know but, the story is that Laserjet II will support postscript via a plug in card. The thing has two slots or something. Now for any Laser printer company listening: Want to clean up in this market, just make us a laer printer that has a self-arbitrating set of ports. I need (and I've heard this from others too) to connect both Appletalk and a Serial link to a (Postscript, of course) laser printer, and not have to switch the printer between the two. Any takers? Maybe this mythical HP card? >-- > Joel West, Palomar Software, Inc. (c/o UCSD) > {ucbvax,ihnp4}!sdcsvax!jww or jww@sdcsvax.ucsd.edu -- "Plan for the future because that's where you Howard C.
