Personally, I think it would be nice if the Shut Down command was in the File menu instead of the Special menu. The Finder is the only application I know of in which the quit command or its equivalent is not in the File menu. A trivial point, perhaps, but it would be a small change that would add consistency to the user interface. Isn't that the idea? Bill Lipa BITNET: p.priapus%macbeth@stanford -------

The suggestion that the Finder's Shutdown command should be in the File menu, for consistency with other applications' Quit commands, reminds me of a question I've had for a long time: why is Quit in the File menu in the first place? It has nothing to do with files, except that if you haven't written out your files it will ask whether it should do so, which I think of as a safety net, not part of the defined function. It doesn't confuse me (in a typical day I use four different operating systems (Mac, Symbolics, Unix, and Multics), and have no trouble switching) but I remember my parents being confused when I was teaching them to use the Mac. --- Barry Margolin Thinking Machines Corp. barmar@think.com seismo!think!barmar
