I'm sure we're all sensitive to not seeing our own or someone else's product damaged by mistaken information, so... I just got off the phone with ALsoft, speaking with Larry Davis there. Had called about updating my DiskExpress, based on the net talk about problems with file tags. He assured me that there is absolutely no problem with any legal copy of the program, and that the version I have, 1.1, is the latest, if you want to check yours. The word is that about 100 disks of the original release (1.0, I'm thinking he said), were previous to Apple's use of file tags on the serial HD-20, and that all these disks have long since been recalled from the owners. He expressed concern that anyone having actual problems is using a bootleg from one of those early disks (I said I suspected most usenet mac people were honest(!)), and says the problem would only occur with flops and HD-20 serial drives, since no one else uses file tags, anyway(!?). They've been running it on a Mac II since early this year. He invited anyone actually having problems with a legal copy to get in touch at ALSoft with the writer of the program, Al Whipple, on their tech support line, 713-353-1510. I really don't know how much more they could offer than this. I'm going to go back to using my copy. I like what it does for me. Clive Steward (do I need to disclaim; I'm an independent.)
