sell a thing called Sun HFS Install
which works like a key disk at boot time
to patch in RAM, your system (includes System 4.0 and Finder 5.4)
so that the MacWorks XL 3.0 / System 4.0 will run HFS.
I'm typing this on a Lisa 2/5 running HFS on 2 5Meg Profiles.
