[comp.sys.mac] DataFrame XP40 problems

pgn@osupyr.UUCP (Paul G. Nevai) (07/29/87)

Help! Help! Help!

Hardware: MacPlus with two MaxPlus 2x4 upgrades (altogether 4 Meg RAM)
plus a MaxSave from MacMemory, Inc.
In addition, an XP40 and an XP20 DataFrame (one updated from
the old version with the new ROM) from SuperMac.

Software: System 4.1 and Finder 5.5. I have about a thousand files
          on each harddisk.

Problem: When on the desktop everything slows down. For instance, it takes
almost one minute to duplicate a 50K file on XP40. Same happens
when copying files from XP20 to XP40. But when duplicating on XP20
or copying from XP40 to XP20 then everything is OK. Also, if I
use DA's such as DiskTop then everything is OK, even if I am still
on the desktop. When I start applications from the desktop I have
equally slow response, though not all the time (probably caching
          influences it). Oasis works fine.

Did anyone on the Net experience similar problems?

Diagnosis: Could be that 40Meg is too much for the System to handle? Apple
said that the new System stuff should work with big drives.

I tried everything: rebuild desktop, DiskExpress, Disk First Aid. According
to them everything is OK. On the other hand, when I reinitilize XP40 using
SuperMacs Init 2.5 or Init 2.6 it fails and gives message: cannot create
directory, hardware problem. BUT: the same initialization for XP20 works OK.

Yesterday I brought home another XP40, and it is doing the same thing!

If anyone on the Net has any idea what's going on, please communicate
it to me.

Thanks,

Paul

P.S. Are you guys at MacMemory, Inc., and SuperMac reading this?

P.S.#2. Any reactions from Apple?

A mystery doth occur occasionally ... I suggest you call Tech Support at
SuperMAC, they are quite knowledgeable and very tenacious. Their direct
number is (415) 964-9660.
