There was a short article in the "Computing" section of the San Jose Mercury News this weekend. In it, the author cited a recent article in InfoWeek, in which InfoWeek heard and then confirmed (with Apple) that Apple has quietly discontinued the Macintosh 512e. The Mercury News article didn't go into the details of the discontinuation; my impression was the Apple has ceased production of this model and that the machine will not be available once whatever supplies are in dealers' inventories and the supply pipeline have been exhausted. The reason for the discontinuation was said to be low demand; apparently the Plus has been a much more popular machine than the 512e during the year-and-a-bit that both machines have been available. This discontinuation, if true, leaves the Macintosh Plus as the "entry level" system in the Macintosh family.

Here on the east coast the 512ke is already unavailable from Apple. One of my clients, an Apple VAR, was unable to fill an order for these machines. -Zigurd

Yup. I just called a dealer (shortly before I read this) and found out that the 512e is no longer made. Since a Mac+ is about $500 (US) more, I've just been priced out of the market again for awhile. Anybody have a used machine out there? Shane D. Looker shane@pepe.cc.umich.edu.
