[comp.sys.mac] Who knowest more?

In today's Chicago Trib, our infamous "On computers" columnist has
surprised me again. In reporting on the deficiencies of OS/2, he recommends
purchasing a Mac over an MS-DOS machine. His reasons are:
      - Mac can address memory beyond MS-DOS's 640k limit
      - New Mac application software continues to be introduced at a dizzying
	  pace.

    and... (here's the big one)

      - "Apple will unveil Multi-Finder, a new front-end for the Mac OS that
	  includes some elements of multitasking."

He also goes on to state that "Apple insiders suggest that enhancements
to MultiFinder are onthe way and that the Mac will be capable of true
multitasking, without applications upgrades, long before the IBM machines."

While this would be a good week to unveil such an application (at
MacWorld Expo in Boston), it surprises me that such a major item could get
to the ears of this MS-DOSer before anyone on this group posted this rumor.
(Or did you all sign Apple non-disclosures? :^) )

Speaking of child of J*ggl*r, have any of you noticed the new fields
in the SIZE template in ResEdit 1.1B3?

Happy rumor-mongering!

_Mike

Rumors about Multi-Finder have been circulating for a few weeks now in places
like InfoWorld. There has also been some chat on CompuServe about it. It
would seem that it will be shown at the Boston expo, but whether we can get
our hands on it there is another question.

My understanding is that it will run on any Mac that has adequate RAM
(i.e., at least a meg) and that at the moment, it will be more like Switcher
than true multi-tasking, since it has no way to protect memory. Memory
protection hardward will eventually be available for the Mac II, which means
that someday Mulit-Finder will do true multi-tasking. For the moment, what
it will give us is the ability to switch between multiple applications running
in multiple windows, though like Switcher, an application will be suspended
when its window isn't active.

If somebody knows more about this than I do, please correct me. I'll ask
around at the expo and see what I can dig up, as well.
