[comp.sys.mac] large hard disk advice solicited

chow@batcomputer.tn.cornell.edu (Christopher Chow) (08/08/87)

I'm on the verge of running out of space on my Dataframe 20 so sometime in
the month or two I'll be in a market for more storage. This time around I'd
like to get a larger drive, probably something in the 40-80 meg range.
Until recently I thought I'd go for something like a Dataframe XP40+40, but
from talking to various people it appears that tape backup systems are not
quite up to par yet w.r.t. reliability. So much for the XP40+40.

So now I'm just looking at hard disk only systems. What do people think
about the Apple HD80SC v. CMS 80 M external v. Jasmine Direct Drive 80.
Since I'm currently on a Mac+ but plan on getting a the Mac II in the
future the drive must be able to take advantage of the faster SCSI bus speed
of the II. I would prefer not having to reformat the drive to gain optimal
performance on the II, but I can live with it if the alternative is a drive
that isn't up to Mac II speed.

Facts, opinions, stories, and rumors solicited.

I'm suprised you're not looking at the DataFrame XP 40 (the one without the
tape). I've had mine for a couple of months now, so I can't comment on long
term reliability, but short term has been great. Very fast (much faster then
either the 20 or the 20 XP), but otherwise very much like the DataFrame 20
(except for the extra 20 mb). I bought mine from ComputerWare in Palo Alto
current price there is $1150.

I'm not associated with either SuperMac or ComputerWare except as a happy
(but poor :-) customer.

Communication Solutions, Inc. think of one way to spell a word.
