I'm not sure of the best place to post this, but I've seen people ask for one of these on this list, so here it goes. I've designed a simple parallel to serial converter which allows you to read 8-bit parallel data through a Mac RS-422 serial port. Actually, the only Mac part of it is the RS-422 line driver at the end of the line: replace it with a 1488 or a Maxim MAX232 (great chip! only needs +5 volts), and you could plug this in to any serial port. Anyway, this is a simple 6 chip circuit, made with parts I had on hand (which is why it's all CMOS - all the chips have more common non-CMOS equivs which you can substitute). A dip-switch lets you select baud rates from 75 to 19.2K. A different oscillator would let you run faster. Two modes of operation: either an external strobe signal causes a byte to be sent, or the circuit will automatically send data whenever the input changes (both cases gated with the UART ready).
