We a looking into offering memory upgrade services to our members, and need to know the suppliers/prices of 120 nanosecond 1-MegaBit SIMMs, for use in Mac+'s, SE's and II's. I too have been looking into pricing of these beasties, in hopes of a) upgrading my II to give it more than the 1 Meg it came with, and b) to see if I could provide customers with pricing better than what Dove and Co. are charging. Unforunately, it appears I was just a few weeks too late. From my investigations, I discovered that the price of 1 Megabit chips has risen from about $15/chip to well over $25/chip (with some suppliers charging over $30/chip) over the last 3 weeks. Although SIMM prices haven't risen by the same ratio, I expect they will shortly (as the current set gets flushed out of the Japan pipeline). Right now, the lowest price I got on a 1 Megabyte SIMM strip was well over $200/strip (whith many places charging over $300/strip). With these high prices, I thought I'd look into making 256K chip bannana board SIMMS (32 256K chips on a SIMM), but pricing of those worked out to be around $150/SIMM for parts--not enough under the current prices to be worth it, and with a fair number of engineering problems that'd have to be worked out. At this point, my suggestion is to wait a while, and hope that prices go down (and perhaps write to your Congressman re: trade barriers with Japan) (unless $300+/SIMM board isn't too onerous an expense for you).
