I am experiencing some serious problems with Font/DA Mover 3.5, the version that came with the recently released System software. When I attempt to install fonts or DAs into the startup System (on my Jasmine 20 meg drive) Font/DA Mover 3.5 hangs right after I hit the "COPY >>" button. The hard disk activity comes on and STAYS on until I hit the reset switch. When I reboot I find the System file is about 5 megabytes!!! This has happened while installing both Fonts and DAs and with copies of Font/DA mover obtained from two different sources. The problem occurs only when I install fonts or DAs into the STARTUP System--other systems (such as those on floppies) don't hang. I have gone back to using Font/DA Mover 3.2 and it works just fine so I don't think it is related to my hard disk. Has anyone had similar problems? Is there anyone out there (especially someone from Apple Computer) who can shed some light on this? Oh, I have a 1 meg Mac Plus running Finder 5.5 and System 4.1. Thanks! Phillip Todd

Yes, except that I ended up with a 12 meg 'system file'. Some other people have reported similar problems to me and probably under the same circumstances (fonts/da's insalled in 'startup System) though I didn't catch the relation till you pointed it out. Thanks. I also beleive but am not sure, that it only happened on systems that were updated using Apple's Installer scripts - will check that out and report. -- John VanMunster, Motorola Inc., OakHill, Tx. {harvard,ihnp4,seismo,gatech,nbires}..!ut-sally!oakhill!jmvm (uucp) Disclaimer: The views contained herein are my own, not those of my employer or the administration of any computer sytem which I may be currently using.

I have used F/DA Mover 3.5 without this difficulty, and have never used an Apple Installer script (after all, how could it possibly do what I want?!?) So it sounds like you're guess is correct. -Eric Eric K. Olson olson@endor.harvard.edu harvard!endor!olson

Several earlier articles (from Eric Olson, John VanMunster, and Phillip Todd, et al) contained references to a Font/DA Mover 3.5 bug that causes one's System file to grow huge, etc. It was theorized that the problem was somehow related to use of Apple's Installer, among other things. No, I don't have an immediate answer to the problem; however, I am the poor soul enslaved to find it (they're just trying to get back at me for writing TeachText! :-). If any of you do happen to find a way to reproduce this problem (without requiring lots of unusual fonts, DAs, etc), I'd appreciate hearing about it (please reply via net mail). But I do keep a System file on floppy just to make sure that there's life after such errors. (not before long I'll have to start using backup-utilities to put my system file on floppy... It's getting close to 800 Kb. Who sez Russian Roulette is boring?
