[comp.sys.mac] getting software registered

fred@rover.UUCP (Fred Christiansen) (09/09/87)

thanks to the half-dozen folk who had recommendations re Mac+ vs. Mac SE.
i picked up my SE w/ HD20SC a week ago. now i need some advice on another
issue involving software registration.

a friend of an acquaintance worked for an Apple s/w store that went belly-up.
the (ex-)employees divided the assets to derive as much compensation as
possible, and this individual ended up with the store's (boughten, not demo)
copies of Aldus PageMaker 2.0 and Quark Xpress. i was referred to him as i
was interested in one or the other.

i reviewed the contents of the PageMaker package and observed that everything
appeared to be there, except for the software registration card. while
reading the installation guide, it mentioned to look for the registration
card in either the user's manual or the diskette envelope; it made no mention
of serial numbers (which i have recently found are liberally sprinkled
thru-out the package). since the envelope was still sealed (and breaking
the seal means acceptance of license terms), i assumed the card would be there.

when i got home, the card was missing. conversations with Aldus indicates
that a package *can* go out w/o serial numbers if it is an *update*. the
seller is sure the original (boughten) PageMaker was registered, but the
serial number info may be lost in the disarray of the collapsed business.
Aldus has done a cursory check and cannot find anything.

i might suspect fraud, yet the package has the ear-marks of authenticity.
any tho'ts on how i might persuage Aldus? thx.
