[comp.sys.mac] Old Fonts and New Computers

brian@ut-sally.UUCP (Brian H. Powell) (09/10/87)

Back in late 1984 and early 1985, when the most technical thing you could
do on a Mac was edit fonts, I designed a German script font called Wartburg.
At the time, I used Apple's Font Editor.
That font doesn't work on this Mac-SE that I'm using now. I double-click
on the font file (or start Font/DA mover 3.5 and open the font file), but the
font doesn't appear. The file is opened, but it appears empty.
I tried creating a FOND, even to the extent of figuring out those
fixed-point widths and heights. It still doesn't work. I dumped the FONT out
in hex and looked at the first few bytes. They look fine.
     Fontastic doesn't deal with it, but I think that's because I haven't
shelled out the money to buy Fontastic-Plus. FontDisplay 5.0 (demo version)
displays it fine, except for one character which seems to want to kern an
awful lot. I don't use ResEdit, because it freaks my computer when I try to
edit fonts.

Is there something I need to do to get it to be recognized? I'd rather
not buy the upgrade to Fontastic-Plus, and I'd rather not dump the font out in
hex and decode the whole thing.
Would it help if I went back to an older Font/DA Mover? I'll probably
try to do some work with it under the older systems to see if that helps. Any
suggestions, assuming I get it to work, on updating the FONT/FOND for newer
systems?

     Thanks.

Suppose you have a 12-point font, resid 16384+12=16396. (A resid
is always a multiple of 128 plus the point size). You also
need a 0-length 'FONT' resource corresponding to size 0,
or 16384. The name of this resource is the font name.

What resources are in the file? Is there a name anywhere?

An answer to both Brian and the person who asked about the Princeton font:

I have an SE, Finder 5.4 ...and Font/DA Mover 3.4. Apparently this is an older
version than I thought...but with the problems y'all are having I wouldn't
trade it for all the fonts in China :-).

I tested both Princeton and Wartburg. No problems. Zilch. Nada. Dunno if
this helps, but it does look as though your Font/DA Mover is at fault.
