[comp.sys.mac] MaSE fan: a downhome remedy

howard@amdahl.amdahl.com (The Toolmaster) (09/16/87)

I recently had to take the Se apart to put a card in it, and when I put
it all together again, the fan was louder than usual; well actually it was
unbearable. So I took it apart again, ran it with the case off, and found
the fan to be *very* quiet. The noise the SE makes is really a function
the case vibration. Therefore, when I put it all together again I left
the screws quite loose in the bottom and left them out of the top. Fairly
quiet (for a MacSE). I then put the top screws in and found they're not
screws at all, they're volume controls for the fan. Tighten them and it
gets very loud, loosen them and the SE quiets down some. This holds true
for all but the bottom right (looking at the back of the SE) screw, which
makes sense since that screw is furthest away from the fan.

So, I guess the guy who designed the fan and the guy who designed the
case aren't talking to each other, or they just couldn't hear each other
over the noise of the fan :-(
