[comp.sys.mac] MacTerminal/Mac II Bug

[Pacman's revenge...]

Okay. I finally couldn't take it anymore, and I went out and blew my
wallet on a Mac II. Very nice machine. I don't understand all the hoopla
about HyperCard, but I suppose that after I play with it a while I will see
it's value. Let's here it for Apple with the color monitor deal.

Here is the problem: I own an *old* Apple 1200 baud modem (not the plug
into the wall 4" by 4" model - the sit under the phone model). I purchased
a new copy of macterminal to work with the Mac II. The modem, cable, and
software all work fine together on my old Mac Plus and the modem works fine
when cabled to the Safari 4 in my office (it isn't really that gross -
the Safari isn't mine).

When running terminal emulation on the Mac II, I get the connect and it
immediately drops carrier. This happens in MacTerminal and FreeTerm, and Red
Ryder bombs after connect. My inclination is to believe that the serial
driver is bad. Does anyone know what the problem is? Better still, is there
a fix?

I don't know the technical problem, but I had the same
troubles. The simple fix is to make sure the #3 DIP switch
(labelled DTR) on the back of your modem is in the DOWN
position. Everything should work just fine then.

The serial driver works fine with a Mac II (or you wouldn't
be getting this message). I'm now using VersaTerm 3.0
(thanks to David Gelphman pestering me, I finally broke
down and bought a copy) and Microphone 1.0 also worked, but
the VT100 emulation is even worse than on a Mac Plus.

MacTerminal 2.1 or later are killed by the famous BasicGlobs
glitch of System 4.1. If you don't have 2.2 (no matter what
the salesman said about it being the 'latest' version), you're
SOOL. This also goes for anything compiled with Megamax
(which Uw used to be). Kermit 0.8 (34) has a 68020 caching
problem, as do some programs built with LightspeedC 2.01 or earlier.

munch...

I have a MacII, Apple modem 1200, Mac prep. adaptor cable,
and 9-pin to 9-pin cable at home. I use Macterminal 2.2
with no problem whatsoever. What do you have the switches
on the modem 1200 set for? On mine 1 is down, and 2 and 3
are up.
