And I've added San Diego State University which also offers a 5% discount
for cash against "regular" price. Despite the bad feelings about Spaztec
Shops here its supprising to see some 'low' prices. I've also included the
combination menu items.

Can anyone tell me what the Apple University Discount (percentage) is?
I'm a new student at the University of Texas at Dallas, and planning
to buy a Mac soon. The UTD bookstore sells them at what looks to be about
30% off retail...Is this normal? I guess I just don't trust campus bookstores,
but if that's the standard discount, then I guess I'll buy it through the
bookstore. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob Kmak

Okay, this is from the Cornell University Microcomputer & Office Systems

Can students at other Apple University Consortium schools buy LaserWriters
and LaserWriter Pluses? They used to be purchasable by students at Cornell
until about a year ago when they became avaliable only to staff and faculty.

Products at the University of Chicago Microcomputer Distribution Center are
available to "full-time faculty, students, and staff." A LaserWriter (with
toner cartridge) would cost me $3240, a LW Plus (also w/cartridge) $3785.

Perhaps the demand outstripped their inventory capacity, though I doubt it.
Insurance problems? Who knows?

My guess is that the high price of the LaserWriter, combined with the
substantial discount, and the fact (?) that most students really are not
in a position to purchase such a high ticket item for strictly personal
use makes the likelyhood of illegal reselling by students to private
sector entities too high in the minds of whoever makes such decisions.

I've kept Chris Chow's original Cornell prices and added in a column
for the prices at the Swarthmore College Bookstore. They are
CONSIDERABLY higher than those at Cornell.

It seems rather odd to permit students to buy expensive computer systems (which
are often sold at or beneath dealer cost), but not laser printers. Espec-
ially when it's possible to obtain laser printers in the 3000-4000 price range
on the mail order market (I seem to remember seeing adverts for laserwriters
for $3500). It's fairly easy to detect attempts to resell such equipment.
Here in Austin, the used Mac market is virtually non-existent: we all had to
sign agreements not to sell our Macs for a couple of years, and to give the
University (of Texas, which IS a Consortium member, despite their denials)
first chance at buy-back if we do. All a store has to do is check the clas-
sifieds once in awhile and cross-check any names or phone numbers with student
lists.

Another weird thing on purchase policies: I think that just about everyone
out there will concede that the Mac II is an order of magnitude different
from the Macintosh; the only commonality is in the II's abilities to emulate
a Macintosh and use certain devices. Here at UT, they are NOT letting students
who purchased Macs from the Consortium purchase Mac II's, apparently obeying
the "one Mac per student" rule.

Again, one might argue the same risk of illegal resale of the equipment, but
the II price under the Consortium is an *incredible* deal. Does anyone else
out there think this is unfair or unusual?

The story on the LaserWriters, as I have heard it, is that
students might buy them and then use them to go into the bussiness
of desktop publishing. In other words, they want the computers
being used for personal purposes and not for bussiness purposes.

Here's what our policy is and what our prices are at UCSC. Any
registered full-time student, faculty or staff member may make up
to one (1) major purchase a year of Apple stuff. A major purchase
is one of the Macintoshes. Anything else (disk drives, printers,
etc) may be purchased as often as you want because the discount
is less on those items than on the Macintoshes themselves.

Our Bookstore (Baytree) quoted me these prices. However, campus
units, such as departments like the Computer Center (where I
work) or a division get their stuff via the purchasing department
whereas the Bookstore tries to turn a profit on their sales of
the following equipment. That's one of the reasons that the
prices will differ. The best thing to do is check what the actual
discount is before markup by your campus Bookstore. So the
Bookstore's prices will be higher than what the University (and
the bookstare) get them at before markup. The discount to
Universities is very big! Typically the bookstore does a markup
of around 10 - 12 per cent after they get them and the
super-duper cheap rate.

other universities. In any case, the discount is very substantial
and is a very good deal. I'd go for it if I were you.

I would guess that, since the LW is such a big-ticket item, they
had problems with students reselling them at a profit. I can't imagine
_many_ students able to afford a >$3000 printer for their personal use.

Here at Berkeley, Students may buy any thing Apple sells in the Mac line,
including Mac IIs and LaserWriters. They do state that you can only buy
one CPU for personal use. I wonder if their record keeping is good enough
to handle students who change schools. The prices are in the same
neighborhood as those at Cornell. For instance, a LaserWriter Plus is
$3582 and Mac II HD40 is $3007. They then slap on a 6% administrative handling
fee and 7% local sales tax, so the final prices are $4062.70 and $3410.54,
respectively.

In case, you wonder whether Apple needs to be concerned about illegal sales
by students, I have a couple of anecdotes. Some company, I think it was
Apple, recently fired a staff member who made a sham sale of about 100 PCs
to a church organization, planning to resell to grey market dealers. I also
recall that Apple has had to crack down on sales of LaserWriters at the
company store, because some employees were netting $500 a unit in a resale
scam. I don't think Apple has placed any restrictions on the Consortium
stores, but universities are often under considerable pressure from local
retail outlets, who resent the not-for-profit stance of most university sales
outlets.

I recently graduated from an AUC school (Carnegie-Mellon U.), and purchased
a Mac II from there (ordered May 9, arrived Sept. 4!). I was one of the
original Mac purchasers there (May '84). The rule quoted to me was that
a student could purchase a II or an SE if they had not yet bought a Mac,
or if it had been purchased before May(?) 1985.

P.S. C-MU is selling II/40meg for $3133. Other prices also lower than

I also added in the prices at the University of Chicago and Emory University

least for the big ticket items. The discounts vary from 35% - 45% for

to 20% - 30% for disks and ImageWriters. There is definitely no uniformity
in the prices being charged.

The only limitation written on the data sheet is that Dataframes can't be
bought on state accounts.

The store also sells the HP product line, as well as a few IBM's (not many
of those! :-)). The IBM discounts are nowhere as good as the Apple dis-
counts.

I recently put together the following comparison for a friend at UWisc.
We were both purchasing a particular configuration of MAC II's. The UCB
numbers include a handling charge (i think it was 8%) by the university.

MAC II PRICING:
					UWisc UCB	Developers	Retail
MacII, 1 meg, 40 meg HD, 1 floppy 3286	3187 2685 5369
Apple extended keyboard 146 145 160 229
Monochrome Monitor (12") 304 253 279 399
Color Monitor (13") 682 635 699 999
MacII video card (2 cards) 630 634 699 998
MacII video expansion kit 95 126 104 149
2 Megabyte expansion kit 693 730 699 999
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
		TOTAL 5836	5710 5325 9142

NOTES:
1. Discounts from retail:
	developers	42%
	UCB 38%
	UWisc 36%
2. National Semiconductor 3rd party memory:
	4Mbyte	1185	295/mbyte
	8Mbyte	2157	270/mbyte
	12Mbyte	3297	275/mbyte
	16Mbyte	4197	262/mbyte
These prices are university discounted. University discount is 40% off retail.
This memory is NuBus memory so it is only usable by A/UX. Apple memory
expansion is usable by either Apple OS or A/UX.

Possibly because they figure that your typical student would not be buying
a LaserWriter for his/her own use and would probably be buying it to give
to Daddy for his business. I think Apple would rather he pay retail price
rather than student price.

Apple has a multi-tiered setup for discounts, depending on what the school
is considering doing with them.

Dartmouth, for example, is part of the Apple University Consortium and is
producing Courseware and other neat things for the Macintosh, which are
available free (or freeish) to other universities. Thus, since Dartmouth
is doing this nice thing for Apple, Apple gives Dartmouth nice prices.

Now, other schools may decide they can't afford to do this sort of development.
Thus, they get less amenable discounts. It also depends on expected volume of
purchases. In other words, it's different for every case.

There are about three different programs, depending on how many purchase your
school is willing to commit to over how long a period. From what I've seen of
the discounts, though, the lowest level is about the same as a good discount
from a dealer. So, unless you know someone at a school that gets a better
discount than yours, your best bet is to stick with your school's discount.

On the other hand, Caltech is not a Consortium school, and is not doing
much with the Mac, and can't possibly be expected to have high sales,
and has prices lower than any of the others that have been reported
on the net.

I guess it really is done on a case by case bases.

About university discounts on the MacIntosh ---

1. Here at the U of I, Apple also discounts software. I think it is
discounted to $50 for macWrite, $50 for macDraw, and $62 for macPaint.

2. When is the Imagewriter LQ due to be released? I am suprised that
Cornell already has pricing. The salesman here in town says Apple has
begun shipping these printers yet.

From what I have heard, part of the price discrepancies might be caused
by the overhead at YOUR UNIVERSITY PURCHASING DEPARTMENT. Two
Independent dealers in town handle MacIntosh Sales, and they told me
you write the check to UI, and the UI gets the Macintosh from its
central storehouse, where they are stockpiled.

I have been informed that Caltech became a Consortium School. Their
prices are now Apple price + 3%. I don't know how these prices compare
to the others posted, since I have not seen the current price list.

The price list I had was from before Caltech was a Consortium school.
