This may have come up before, but I thought I'd pass along something I dis- covered at work today. I had installed TOPS on two Mac Pluses that had System 4.1 already on them. This was using the March 18, 1987 version of TOPS, which is the most current. Everything went fine, but soon after I started getting some real weirdness. HyperCard would just restart the machine IF TOPS was installed, didn't if it wasn't. OK, so it's related to TOPS--I called Centram to see if they knew of such a problem. A fellow named Paul called me back in a reasonable amount of time and soon figured out the problem. What happens is this: TOPS has no problems with System 4.1 The Installer for TOPS, however, does half a no-no: it takes several resources from the System file on the installer disk and puts them in the System file of the target. This was done to ensure that vital parts of 3.2, for which this was designed, got installed (such as PACK 0 and INIT 31) So, when I installed TOPS, it happily replaced some resources with 3.2 versions. This causes some very funky behaviour occasionally; the funniest one is asking you to insert your hard disk :-) Anyway, the solution is to make a backup of your TOPS master, run Apple Installer for Sys 4.1 on IT, and then use IT to install TOPS on your 4.1 system. This seems to work. Hope this helps someone else before they bang their head... -cbb Chris Borton, UCSD Office of Academic Computing borton@sdacs.ucsd.edu

I had even worse problems with the Tops installer here. The old Feb 17th (?) version worked fine but the new March version that we just got for our 2 new SE HD20 macs died with a system error. I found the easiest way to install Tops is to simply use the Font/DA Mover to move the Tops DA over from the installers system file and then just copy the Tops, Tops Help and Interbase (if you need it) files over with the finder. This works great. Also as a side note the Tops serial number is in the Tops file itself. This means you can put the Tops DA in a DA file and update past versions of it without causing problems with duplicate serial numbers. I personally found this useful in being able to make one Tops backup disk with the latest copy of all the files except Tops of which I have 6 folders each with a different Tops file in them labeled as to the machine which that serial number of Tops goes to. Hope this helps someone else who maintains many macs using Tops. *********************************************************** usual disclaimers--- Patrick Mead ogcvax!inteloa!omepd!patm ***********************************************************

This works great. The way I did it was to install TOPS, then reboot and re-install 4.1. It works fine, but I wonder... am I missing something?
