We recently got a Jasmine hard drive 80 at work and I ran into an interesting problem. The mere existance of one of the PD programs which Jasmine puts on their drive causes problems for me. I had to delete the program and rebuild the desktop file in order to fix it. This type of problem could rear its ugly head in the future... The program was an FKEY runner type program which had Finder File CREATOR type FKEY. In order to have a custom ICON on the desktop, there must be a RESOURCE of type FKEY in the file. In this case the resource ID = 0. Of course one of my favorite FKEYs is FKEY 0 and hitting COMMAND- SHIFT-0 causes the FKEY 0 in the Desktop file to be loaded (instead of the FKEY 0 in the system file) and since it is not real code but rather is likely to be someone's name, etc. the Mac dies a miserable death. MultiFinder exacerbates this problem since the Desktop file is always open. Here is an example of a program whose mere EXISTANCE on my Mac causes problems. I tried to call Jasmine to convince them that they could help people out by NOT including this piece of software on their disks but I couldn't get through to the tech support people and even though the people who I did talk with (at the main number) said the Tech Support people would call me back, they never did. I found this amusing and fortunately not too difficult to debug but I can imagine someone else might run into problems too. David Gelphman daveg%slacvm.bitnet@forsythe.stanford.edu
