[comp.sys.mac] Where can I get "Pyro"

jlc@atux01.UUCP (J. Collymore) (09/25/87)

I was recently told about a screen saver program called "Pyro." It is
supposed to blacken the screen and then create fireworks-like explosive
displays on the screen. I was told this is either shareware or public domain.
Could someone tell me where I could get this program? Is it useable on my
MAC SE? Is it only obtainable via bulletin boards (I have no modem, nor any
other access to a BBS)? If it is shareware, who should I contact and how much
should it cost?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it does all that. It's great.

No, No, NO! It's NOT shareware, and it's NOT PD!

Pyro! comes free if you purchase Suitcase ( a program that allows you
to have as many fonts, desk accessories or FKEYs as you want ) or
PowerStation (a powerful configurable Finder replacement -- the
combination of PowerStation and DiskTop, from CE Software, makes a more
than satisfactory replacement for the Finder). Pyro! should work fine
on your SE; I'm using it with a Plus running Sys 4.1/Finder 5.5.
Contact your local Mac software dealer to get Suitcase or PowerStation,
or oder direct for $59.95 each from:

Software Supply
599 North Mathilda Avenue
Sunnyvale, CA 94086
408-749-9311

(there is an 800 number for ordering -- I will have to dig it up)

I think the confusion comes from there being an evaulation version of
PowerStation that comes on the Suitcase disk. That evaluation copy may
be freely distributed. (I will BINHEX it and upload to
comp.binaries.mac, if requested.) The evaluation copy will do screen
blanking like Pyro! will, so you can get a taste of it and decide
whether or not you want to order. (There isn't a similar demo copy of
Suitcase.) I bit the bullet, bought both programs, and love them. I'm
addicted to lots of fonts and desk accessories, and can FINALLY have
more than 15 DAs (and as many fonts and FKEYS as I want) without having
to fragment my System file all over the place, use ResEdit to patch
Font/DA Mover, etc.

Summary: Pyro! comes free with purchase of Suitcase or PowerStation,
but it's neither shareware nor PD. List price of either product is
$59.95. I'm a very satisfied customer.

Billy Steinberg, the principle author of Pyro! (Steve Brecher contributed
lots of stuff to it), told me that he expects Pyro! to be the most pirated
piece of Mac software. I think he may be right. Unfortunately.

Pyro is neither ShareWare nor Public Domain. It includes a specific copyright
notice that states that it is NOT to be given away. It is included with both
SuitCase and PowerStation, products of Software Supply. PowerStation is a
Finder replacement that I really like, but some people don't. I have yet to
find anyone who didn't like SuitCase. It allows you access to Fonts, DAs, and
FKeys which are not in your System File or the current application just as
though they were installed in the System.
