A better way to make disks reinitializable for demonstration purposes would
  be to use either a bulk eraser or very strong magnetic.  With a bulk eraser
  you could do it much quicker and with much less wear and tear on you mac than
  rebooting it in the middle of an erase.

Radio shack sells such a beast.  Here at OSU we have also used the little plate
  that the librarian uses to 'unprotect' books so they won't set off the alarm.
  It dosen't really erase it but it sure does scramble the signals well enough.
