[comp.sys.mac] Screen size -- Is it too small?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't find the screen small.

Lots of people I know have that argument: The screen is too small. Of course,
these are the same people who are using Panasonic Senior Partners and don't
have any complaint about the screen size.

I have an IBM-XT with a CGA monitor in my office for a few weeks, but I have
to admit that my nine-point Monaco is just as readable as it's nice big
screen. Besides, even if I put the PC on the floor and just have the CRT,
keyboard, and mouse on the desk, it seems to take up more room than my
Macintosh.

Now, I wouldn't mind a bigger monitor, so that I could put more windows on the
screen simultaneously (a big plus for things like MultiFinder) but I don't
find the Mac monitor to be that small. Is it just me?

No, it isn't. I have no problems with the Mac screen, and while I too would
like a bigger monitor to display more windows, the monitor size generally
doesn't bother me. Certainly for applications like heavy-duty desktop
publishing or for, say, a graphic artist, a big screen would be very valuable,
but for everyday use the regular screen is fine.

My attitude exactly. I don't find the 9" screen too small for a
single window. I wouldn't mind a 12" screen to allow a few visible
windows at once. But I am loathe give up the small footprint and
absolute quiet of my Mac. My ideal machine would cram a 12" inch BW
monitor with even greater resolution, a 40meg HD, a 68020 with 4meg of
main memory and multitasking, into a box less than an inch wider and
higher than the original Mac (they can make up for it by taking a
little off the depth), and NO fan. I like the original dinky
keyboard, too. While we're at it, why don't we list it under $5000?

I've never used the 'Panasonic Senior Partners' so your comment above
does NOT apply to me. In fact the Macintosh is the first personal computer
I've used with any regularity and the point still remains. The screen is
too small. Even if YOU don't find the screen too small I can guarantee you
that MANY people do find this and if the name of the game is making your
customers happy and expanding your market, then Apple would do well by offering
the type of machine I indicated my earlier posting: modular with a larger
screen (and much cheaper than a Mac II!). Even though business is picking
up on the Mac I don't think that validates every aspect of the hardware.

My final comment on this matter is that I suspect that as soon as people
start using MultiFinder (which will be the standard operating environment
in 3-6 months for many users) you will be cursing the small monitor. Part
of this is because Apple hasn't yet put any special window management
into MultiFinder (beyond the layer manager) and you soon get swamped with
windows if you run multiple applications. Worse still, as more applications
run in background you really may want to SEE what those applications are
WRITING into their windows so hidden windows may be a pain.

If it fits in your field of vision, it's too small.
(Likewise, if you can see the pixels, they're too big.)

Personally I like the 9 inch screen. There have been a few times when a
larger one would be handy. We have people in our department who have
failing eyes. They have a lot of trouble using the Mac. The default
character size is just to small. I have adjusted the normal default to
Geneva 14 and that helps. The only trouble I have now is with terminal
programs. The font used in all the ones I have seen is 9 point and not
adjustable. This has caused the greatest problem. We are considering the
ProApp screen that is a 12" version of the Mac screen ($300 US) to over
come this problem. If any one has any other suggestions my eyes and ears
are open. Please reply directly to me. Thanks.
