[comp.sys.mac] Multifinder bugs

hunt@firqb.dec.com (Phil Hunt) (10/16/87)

Hello,

Just got Multifinder 6.0b6 and System 4.2a4 and have found some bugs I would
like to share:

1) Resedit 1.1b1 - On some files, like 'Finder', I get a message:

	Error opening Resource File (-49)

If I am running Multifinder, If I run only Finder, everything is OK. I have
also tried increasing the Resedit Partition, to no avail, it still errors. Also,
once it crashed the machine back to MacsBug level, but as 'ES' (Exit Shell)
command recovered to the desktop.

2) FONT/DA Mover 3.5 - If running Finder, everything is OK, but if running
Multifinder, DAs don't show when a file is opened!! It looks like no DAs are
in the file!!!

3) POP KEY (From FKEY Manager 3.0) - POPKEY is as INIT. It crashes on system
startup as the desktop is being drawn, not when the INIT is executing. I even
tried setting the 'Magic' rectangle off the Menu Bar or disabling it, to no
avail...

4) LS Pascal 1.11a - While running a program in debug mode, I got the message:

Zone Damaged - Continue at your own Risk

I did, LSP crashed. This was under Multifinder.

============
All in all, the B6 version of MultiFinder is very slick. I ran most everything
under it and they worked except as noted above. Lets see if the released
version is even MORE improved!!!

The documentation for the Beta versions says that the FONT/DA Mover should
not be used under Multi-Finder. I don't know if this will continue into the
released versions -- I know Suitcase will not allow you to open Font or DA
files under Multi-Finder (though you can have it auto-load them during
boot-up).

This error message means:

-49	opWrErr	The read/write permission of only one access
path to a file can allow writing.

In other words, the file is being used. This makes sense, since finder is
running, you are not allowed to go changing the contents of its file. Close
the finder (is this possible?), and it should run.

In my opinion, the 'bug' is with the system error handler, or the
application's error handler. It should report some meaningful
message, in addition to the cryptic error number, and then allow the
option of:

	1) recover with the application's resume procedure.
	2) ignore the error, and proceed at your own risk
	3) quit    the application and return to (multi)finder;
	4) reset the mac.

I would hilite option 1 if there is a resume procedure, 3 if the
finder is available (findername != currapplname) and 4 otherwise.

Unfortunately, the text for all these messages would take up
incredible amounts of room.

This is not really a bug. The problem is that under Multifinder, the Finder
resource file is always open, and cannot be opened again with write permission.

You need to use Font/DA Mover 3.6, which is compatible with Multifinder.

First, let it be understood that I am using and referring to the RELEASE
version of MultiFinder here - 6.0/4.2. It is out, I have it, you will soon
have it available too - just lean on your dealer.

I'll address this LIFO. . . .

SuitCase does indeed not let you open additional font/da files beyond those
opened at startup (around 30 or so files for me).

Font/Da Mover works just fine, thank you very much - so long as you use
version 3.6 which comes with the release version of MultiFinder.

A highly satisfied,

cheeser

The System Error handler isn't responsible for handling file-system
or resource manager errors, and to expect it to do so is asking a little
much; generally it should be up to the application to respond to a file
system error, post a meaningful message, and handle it appropriately.

The System Error handler itself cuts in when a truly fatal
error has occurred; odd address, out of memory, and illegal instruction
are typical errors to see. In this case, the system is extremely unstable,
and the System Error handler needs to be able to do its thing using
a bare minimum of system resources.

	This is true.

Sorry. I should have mentioned this.

The new System software package consists of 4 disks.

* System Tools 1 with Multifinder 1.0, Finder 6.0, and System 4.2
* System Tools 2 with LaserWriter 5.0 and the necessary background printing
software (the ImageWriter driver is still version 2.6)
* Utilities 1 with HD SC Setup (1.5), Disk First Aid (1.3), ...
* Utilities 2 with Font/DA Mover (3.6) & Apple File Exchange (1.0.1)

I don't know if it will be made available on Compuserve.

Especially if every application has its own copy of them. Many include a
subset for the most likely error messages. It would be nice if Apple put
error messages in an STR# in the System File, which would be localized
to the correct language. Then developers wouldn't have to duplicate
them again and again. (Of course, this is not a novel idea... )

Is the new system software package actually shipping, say from APDA? I tried
the three big Apple Dealers here in San Diego; Two wouldn't admit that it was
out. The third said he believed their shipment was on it's way, but could give
no delivery date. I would really like to get a copy before I go back east
November 1. What's the _official_ status?

Thanks in advance....

The next system release is only shipping to developers now. Apple is holding off distribution to the general public to give developers some time to work with it.

I called the SuitCase folks to ask about this and Pyro not auto-blacking
under multi-finder. Suitcase does let you open additional DAs if you
are just using finder, but not in "multi-tasking environments" like switcher,
servant, multi-finder. Something about contention for the DA menu. This
is stated in the manual, and I was told they hope to remove this "restriction".

My biggest gripe was that Pyro! could not be told to auto-black in
multi-finder. It notices that there ate tasks "not-idle" and does not
auto-black. They indicated they are working on making Pyro! "multi-finder
aware".
