[comp.sys.mac] SuperMac monitor review.

ilan_-_rabinowitz@cup.portal.com (11/06/87)

After waiting approximately 2 months (due to SuperMac's delayed shipments)
I finally received the 19" Monochrome monitor through my dealer. I received
the SuperMac Graphix controller card, which plugs into the Nubus of my MAC ][,
at the same time.

Upon bringing it to location (avoiding a hernia in the process) I eagerly
unpacked the monitor and controller, read the instructions (what little
I found), plugged it all in, and turned on the power.

.... You guessed it, DEAD ON ARRIVAL. My heart -- be still.

I reinstalled the unit and still got a "wavy", "oozing", "electrifying"
picture on the screen. What can it be ????

I took a closer (MUCH closer) look at the controller (I figured I might luck
out) -- and I did !!!

I found that the Crystal (that SHINY silvery chip, with four legs) has popped
out of the socket. As I tried (desparately) to push it back into the SOCKET the

darn thing kept on jumping back out at me... SUPERMAC: The socket was a good
idea, is there a way to keep the Crystal IN THE SOCKET without having to tape
it with SCOTCH TAPE ??????

Once I plugged everything back in -- AMAAAAAZING, it worked (well, almost).

Although now I could see some old familiar faces in my windows on the 19 incher,

I found that a portion of the visible picture (approximately 25% of the picture)

wrapped around on itself.

After being unable to figure out what the problem is, I called SuperMac
technical support. I must admit that although initially I was forewarned that
their people were busy and might take 3 (THREE) DAYS to get back to me, a
very polite techie got back to me within 3 HOURS -- GOOOOD for you, SuperMac !!
The gal confirmed my fear that there was little I could do and I need to have
the monitor shipped back to the factory !!!!

I went back to my dealer and traded the my one and only with his one and only
other one. BUT, when I brought the latest and greatest back home (still
escaping the old hernia menace) I GOT THE SAME PROBLEM !!!!

Well, to make a long story short:

             1. SUPERMAC: The five seconds it would have taken some one on
the factory floor to make the adjustments and assure
the QUALITY of your product would have been worth it !!!
             2. Since October 1 the unit has been performing fine -- just a
minor Degaussing hickup every 5 or 6 days.

             3. The unit does not produce an unusual amount of heat for its
                          size.

             4. The characters on the screen of the 19" unit seem dwarfed in
comparison with my Apple monochrom unit -- I don't
                          think its an illusion.

5 I find the large screen to be a very comfortable desk top, since

I am able to fit all the windows I need on one screen.

             6. It would have been a good gesture to provide a monitor stand
along with the unit, so that I don't have to purchase
one separately (which I didn't) and thereby be able
to place the unit on top of my MAC ][ without cracking

                          the case.

If anyone has any more questions I may be found on Portal. My name ?? Oh yes:
