[comp.sys.mac] OLD ROM's no longer supported

chuq@plaid.Sun.COM (Chuq Von Rospach) (11/11/87)

I haven't seen this mentioned before, so I thought I'd make sure
everyone saw this. According to the October 30 issue of the Macintosh
Business Letter, Apple sent a note to all developers in October announcing
that the 64K ROM in the 128K and 512K machines will no longer be supported.

To quote: "Industry sources stated that Apple's market research showed that
there are very few 64K ROM machines still in service, as sales of upgrade
kits indicate that most have been upgraded to at least a 512KE." [my
subnote: the unofficial figure I've seen is that there are < 20,000 old ROM
machines in existence, in a user base of well over 1,000,000 machines.
That's less than 2%]

Upgrade kits will still be available at Apple dealers -- the upgrade is not
being discontinued. If you haven't upgraded by now, you better if you have
any intention of staying with the main line of Macintoshes.
