I'm trying to fix a sick machine and could use some help. Configuration is: 2-floppy SE with an HD20. Thing started bombing with id = 02 when the user tried finding files on the hard disk with hfs locator. He then ran HD20 Test, which gave him a message something along the lines of 'Test failed. Go see your Apple dealer'. Same problems after reformatting the disk. It turned out the problems started after this guy installed system 4.1, so I tried putting an older system on the disk. That cured the problem with hfs locator--and everything seems to run fine--but HD20 Test still thinks something's wrong. On the other hand, both Disk First Aid and Disk Express say everything's ok (I also tried paging through all the directory sectors with Fedit looking for something it couldn't read, but didn't find anything). HD20 Test quits almost immediately--we don't even get to the block transfer business. Is SE + HD20 + 4.1 (+ hfs locator?) a known source of trouble? Should I believe HD20 Test or DFA/Disk Express? If the former, what's left to be tried? Thanks. Mark Francillon Dept. of Anthropology, University of Chicago ...ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!moku
