[comp.sys.mac] Defining keys in Microsoft Word?

ins_adgj@jhunix.UUCP (11/16/87)

I have a question. I've started writing papers in french on a
Mac 512ke. I've figured out how to make accented characters using the
"overlay" function of Word (version 3. something, but not 3.00). My
question is:

Is there any way I can define some of the "option" keys as being
these new characters? Right now I'm having to keep them in another file
and copy and paste them into my document through the clipboard. Ideally
I'd like to find some way of doing this without having to design a whole
new font since I doubt I have the proficiency needed to do this.

Read the Macintosh user manual. (Whatever they call
it these days.)

One of the appendices (E, I think) near the back of the
book shows how to generate accented characters.

Or bring up the Keycaps DA, press "option" and see what
interesting accent-like characters appear. Try typing
"option-<mumble>" followed by a letter and see what happens.

(I do an occasional newsletter in Spanish, so I went and
read my manual to find out how to do it.)

Unless I misunderstand you, you don't have to do anything special to
get the French accented characters. The Frencg department here is using
Word 3.01 with problems. To get the accented characters, do the following:

character with ^ option-i, then press the character you want accented
character with ` option-`, then press the character you want accented
character with ' option-e, then press the character you want accented
c with , option-c
a with o over it option-a (this isn't french)
character with " option-u, then press the character you want accented

I don't believe there are any others needed for French, but I'm no
expert. Hope this helps.

I have to learn to proofread my postings. An odd typo is OK (like
Frencg above), but when I leave out "no" it definitely is misleading.
I meant that the French Department is having NO PROBLEMS at all using
MS Word. Sorry for typos, adn I pormiise nto to do ti agian :-)
