[comp.sys.mac] Hard Disk Drives--AGAIN!

crogers1@umn-d-ub.D.UMN.EDU (Clyde Rogers) (11/17/87)

At long last I'm bringing my Macintosh up to speed with a shiny new hard disk
drive. I was planning on buying a Dataframe XP-30, but then clouds loomed on
the horizon. Rumor has it that the Dataframe is posessed by the devil, and
after a few months the evil RLL encoding it uses will turn all my valuable
data into chowder.

Is this rumor unfounded? Are those evenings of glee I was anticipating on the
Mac going to be nights in hell if I go with a Dataframe? What experiences have
you had with the competition? I'm considering either a Jasmine 40 or CMS 40
instead of the Dataframe, but that would involve going without food for the
next month or two.

In short, I want the Dataframe if it has a good chance of being reliable. I
don't want to buy a drive that has an inordinate number of problems. If this
is a problem drive, I'd value your recommendation for an alternative.

Please send your responses to me, or post them if you think others may be
interested.

Thanks,
   Clyde Rogers

[user uncertain about Dataframes, is considering Jasmine]

I've also been collecting information about HD's, being in the process of
getting my first one, like you (hooray! wanna go get drunk? (-8). A lot of
this seems to be like "Ford 'n Chevy." Some people swear by one, other people
by another.

Jasmine certainly seems to be popular these days, and always does well in
HD comparison tests in the Macrags. They come with 10 megs of PD software,
as well. I called them yesterday, however, and they said they were currently
about 6 weeks back-ordered, so don't plan on getting one tomorrow.
