Just got a copy of Multifinder, et. al. today and -- I'm breathless. Apple has really pulled off a coup in my book. Of course, two megs is pretty important -- but then that's good for the semiconductor industry. Of course, it's not real multitasking -- but then who gives a shit (to use the vernacular). . Thought my procedure for updating the system files on my hard disk might be of interest. Before you start, back up your hard disk for good measure, then reboot from System Tools Disk #2. Read the Read Me file. Leaf quickly through the Software Update and Mac Utilities manuals. READ the Multifinder manual somewhat more carefully, and do the tutorial. . (1) Make a finder copy of your old System file. (2) Trash all the Apple supplied files currently resident in your System Folder, save ImageWriter and AppleTalk ImageWriter, which have not changed in the new version. (3) Trash the old Font/DA Mover, Disk First Aid, and the Hard Disk Utilities (if you use Apple's). (4) Copy over the new Font/DA Mover, Disk First Aid, etc. (5) Copy over all the system files you desire into your hard disk System Folder. (6) Reboot from hard disk. . (7) Use ResEdit to edit the LAYO resource of the Finder, if you know what that is. (8) Use ResEdit to copy your FKEY's from Copy of System to the new System. Note that I don't trust FKEY Manager because I've had it bomb too many times on me -- I won't let it near a System File now, though it's still quite useful. (9) Launch Font/DA Mover. Option-Click the right hand Open button and then open Copy of System. (10) Copy over the desired fonts. (11) Click the DA radio button. Eliminate the Apple DA's you don't use. Option-Click the right hand Open button again to re-open Copy of System. Copy over desired DA's. (12) Quit, trash Copy of System, clean up the desktop, and start exploring. . Hope this helps, jeff m . P.S. If you use both QuicKeys and Pop-Keys, rename Pop-Keys to ZPop-Keys.
