I've seen several messages asking about BinHex 4.0 and asking where to get it. I must be missing the replies, and I have no idea where to get BinHex 4.0. Is this an application on the Mac, or a UNIX implementation? I have BinHex 5.0, which has been out since 1985. I don't recall ever seeing a version 4.0. Version 5.0 has been working just fine for converting the files on the Net to binary on the Mac, but it's output looks quite different when converting a file to hex. I assume we shouldn't be using version 5.0 on the Net? Exactly _what_ should we be using, and where can we get it? What are the differences between version 4.0 and 5.0? Does anyone know of a UNIX implementation? With the large number of questions asked about these (and related) topics, is there a newsgroup or other area where we can stick some files to answer all these questions? Or am I _way_ out in left field here? -James L. Paul

BinHex is a Macintosh application that has gone through several versions. The ones I can remember offhand are: Obsolete versions of BinHex (all free): BinHex3.BAS formats produced: .HEX decoded: .HEX BinHex 2.0 formats produced: .HCX, .HEX decoded: .HCX, .HEX BinHex 2.1 formats produced: .HCX, .HEX decoded: .HCX, .HEX (no stand-alone version 3.0 to avoid confusion with MS-BASIC BinHex) Current versions of BinHex: BinHex 4.0 formats produced: .HQX decoded: .HQX, .HCX, .HEX Free; remains the best alternative for encoding Mac binary files to be posted to USENET or archived on ARPANET (there are many types of computers on ARPANET and I believe news/ mail links on USENET are only intended to pass ASCII text) BinHex 5.0 formats produced: MacBinary I decoded: MacBinary I plus .HQX, .HCX, .HEX Shareware; useful for sending MacBinary files to a service that uses them (Compuserve, GEnie, etc.) in the event that your terminal emulator does not support MacBinary directly. Since practically every Macintosh terminal emulator around with the exception of MacKermit can produce and decode the MacBinary format on-the-fly and since BinHex 5.0 is unable to produce text-format BinHex files, its utility is rather questionable. BinHex 5.0 was written before the MacBinary II format was introduced, and so does not have support for the MacBinary II enhancements. -- Thomas Newton

I am in desparate need of BinHex 4.0. I have BinHex 5.0 and couldn't figure out why I couldn't create text files with it. No wonder. Could someone please post BinHex 4.0 to comp.binaries.mac, or please e-mail it to me? I've been wanting to post to the binaries for some time now, but without BinHex 4.0 was not able to. Thanks. J. Both are Mac programs; version 5.0 accepts input from 4.0-ed files, but I don't think it works the other way around. For use on the net, version 4.0 is most common right now, but that probably will change as 5.0 gets spread around more. --Roger -- Roger Terrell Muskingum College ...cbosgd!musky2!terrell (UUCP) New Concord, OH 43762
