Can anyone explain why New York is referred to as the Big Apple? What does this term actually mean and what is its significance to this city?

Some of the districts in New York city have police mounted on horse back. This, at one time was about all the mobile police rode on. Of course there were lots of droppings laying around, if you get the drift (no pun intended). These were/are called road apples. As New York grew in population so did the the cities police services, creating more droppings in more of the city more of the time. Eventually there was so many people and so much droppings that every thing and everybody smelled the same. Hence the name: THE BIG APPLE
