Three tidbits from the "New Products" section of the November issue of IEEE Computer, quoted without permission: "Microsoft has announced Word version 4.0 for the IBM PC... "A new toggle switch between text and graphics modes allows users to enter data in the text mode and toggle to graphics mode to see the text displayed on the screen as it will appear on the printed page. "...Macro functions can be created using a record mode... "Summary sheets for each document and the ability to search for words and phrases... "Other new features include redlining, a spreadsheet link, style-by- example style sheets, integration of the spelling checker, line drawing and paragraph borders..." [Can we expect Word 4.0 for the Mac soon? I have quoted at length because I don't know which of these "new" features Mac Word 3.0 already has.] "Interleaf has announced Interleaf Publisher document-processing software for the Apple Macintosh II... Interleaf Publisher costs $2495. It uses a Macintosh II with five megabytes of RAM and a 40M-byte hard disk. A complete system, including hardware, software, and one year's support, costs $10,900. With an Apple Laserwriter Plus printer, the system costs $16,500." "Varityper's VT600 laser printer reputedly achieves a resolution of 600 dots per inch both vertically and horizontally. It comes with a Postscript raster image processor that employs Adobe System' M68020-based Atlas board with six megabytes of RAM... Typestyles can be downloaded to the VT600's 20M-byte Winchester disk. "... Rated speed of 10 pages per minute... "The VT600 supports Appletalk... "$13,500" [Is six megabytes enough?]
