[comp.sys.mac] Mac II 40meg & Multifinder

jg2f+@andrew.cmu.edu (Jude Anand George) (11/22/87)

   Is anyone else with a Mac II w/ Apple 40meg disk having problems copying
files
in MultiFinder 1.0? Every so often, my machine hangs in the middle of a file
copy. I would like to know if this is a problem with my disk, or with
Multifinder. Recently, someone posted that certain faulty hard disks showed
this symptom, but mine is not within range of the serial numbers mentioned.
Also, MacWrite 4.6 gives me this annoying message that some paragraphs could
not be read into memory when I start up the application. What's wrong?

The symptom you cite with regard to MacWrite is evidence of a disk problem.
I had that trouble with the version of MacWrite which is prior to 4.6.
There apparently was a bad disk block within the file. I solved the problem
by backing up everything on the disk and then reinitializing it. The
reinitialization process finds and logs bad blocks, which are then not used
to store data.

As big a pain as it is, you should probably reinitialize your drive and try
again before sending the drive back. All hard drives get a few bad blocks;
the trick is to avoid trying to use them to store data ...
