[comp.sys.mac] Tecmar+OldROMS+Finder5.3+DeskTop=Lost Files

I remember sometime ago some mention of Finder 5.3 being potentially
destructive to files. I have just lost several files in the following incident:
I moved a bunch of files (~20) out of their respective folders directly
onto the desktop. Then, I moved some other folders out of the same volume
from which the bunch of files came directly
out onto the desktop. Next, I attempted to move the said
files into said folders. I was presented with the "that file
already exists - replace or cancel" dialog. The files did NOT exist in the
destination folder! Like a fool, I clicked replace, and the files being moved
were gone for good. Oops!
A shut down followed by a cmd-option reboot did not resurrect the files,
In fact, some of the changes I had made to my folders were made, some weren't.
What a mess!
I post this story so those with similar software/hardware combinations
will not lose files in the future. The moral seems to be: Don't move files
directly onto the desktop. Although I'm not sure. ????? Was Finder 5.3 the
notorious "killer" version of the finder I remember hearing about? Respond
email please.
Using: 512K, OLD ROMs, Tecmar MacDrive (no jokes please). System 3.2,
Finder 5.3.
Oh, yes, I _do_ have a backup, I _think_ (with HD Backup you're never
really sure) <-deliberately snide remark - one of these days when the line
in out consortium store is less than an hour long I'm gonna buy DiskFit...:-)
