[comp.sys.mac] Mac II /hardware advice request

en2j@vax1.UUCP (Thomas Purcell) (12/01/87)

This is a request for advice: I'm trying to put together a very respectable
personal system for the next couple of years (till the Super-engineering
workstations come down to $5k.). Its uses would include some commercial
applications (that is, business type stuff) and software development.
Preferred characteristics are:

o	Unix -- now or very soon (avail. within 1 yr.)

o	desktop publishing at least up to mac quality level

o	multiple operating system capability, even if this
		anticipates additional processor cards (methinks
this is better than buying 4 different machines.?.)

o	speed. don't want my hair to turn grey while I'm
waiting for something running on a hardware simulator,
for example, to execute a single instruction

o	color graphics better than IBM cga, cheaper than a
		$50k Silicon Graphics workstation

o	full-page display would be pretty handy.

	o	Big harddrive; ample memory
(80 meg, 2 Meg is a nice starting point, bigger better)

I might be inclined to believe that a Mac II with a lot of nice add-on
hardware would be my best bet -- except for that "speed" requirement
(a few times faster than a regular mac does not a workstation make).

Would anyone like to recommend the best Mac II add-ons that would get
closest to this? Will Apple be three more years before releasing Unix
for the Mac II ? Is the Mac II too slow? Would somebody care to
suggest an alternate bundle of equipment? Please advise ... (thanks!)

(please send copy of reply direct to mail address.. thanks!)

I am interested in the same information, with a few additional
tidbits requested... I have heard that A/UX loaded on an 80 Meg
drive will leave you with all of 10 Meg to work in. What kinds
of larger drives are available? What are their quirks? Price?
Drawbacks? Can you get something like a 140 Meg internal drive?
What kinds of/how big/how many hard drives can a Mac II handle?
My goal is to have the best of both worlds, Mac and Unix, on a
personal computer. My price range is 5-8K. (presumably bought
with a student discount before I leave the academic world in a
year or so) I realize that talking with the university dealers
is the best way to answer these questions, however they seem to
be even less informed about the new stuff than I am. Advice?
Proposed package ideas (with ballpark prices)? Thanks in advance!
