[comp.sys.mac] Jasmine BackPac 40

loucks@intvax.UUCP (Cliff Loucks) (11/30/87)

Recently there were some generally favorable comments here
concerning the SCSI drives available from Jasmine. But, as I
recall, the comments concerned only the Direct Drive series. I am
interested in the BackPac 40, mostly due to it's physical size and
location, as well as no fan noise.

If anyone has any experience with the BackPac 40s, I would greatly
appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.

Personally I would get the DD80, even tho it has a fan etc, for a few hundred
more you get 37 more megs of storage! Trust me you'll need it! Or suggest to
Jasmine that they make a Backpak 80!

My question about the BackPac drive is: can it be used
on a machine other than a Mac Plus? Seems like an important
issue for an external drive.

Considering two attributes of the BackPac 40, I don't think that it
can be used anywhere but a Mac Plus. Because:

  1) It needs a SCSI interface to run...and only the Mac Plus and
the Mac SE have the SCSI in the right physical location.

  2) It mounts on the back of the Macintosh...which blocks the fan
exhaust vent in the Mac SE.

(And before anyone points this out, I know that these comments may not
apply to third party upgrades. I'm only talking about 'official'
 Mac configurations).
