Has anyone found a communications program with vt100 emulation for the mac II which will: 1) use the entire screen, and 2) use a larger font than Red Ryder 9.4? Thanks. Eisuke Muroga University of Illinois ARPA emuroga@b.cs.uiuc.edu CSNET emuroga@uiuc.csnet USENET uiucdcsb!emuroga

Thanks. >Eisuke Muroga >University of Illinois ---------- YES! The newest version of Smartcom (gosh I forgot the version number, anyone else know?). It has a resizable text window, and the old icon buttons on the bottom, are now their own window, and can be moved and flipped (horizontal or vertical). It's the only communications program I have found which has NEVER crashed on my MacII. MacTerm2.0, RR9.4, T+( a compuserve joke), and some others I tried bomed doing various things (usually a data transfer :-(( ). It supports only Xmodem transfers, however it support FAST Xmodem (no error checking), and 1k Block transfers. It has "scripts" to do things like log you onto your machine, and it knows about the new keys on the extended keyboard (my control and escape keys work WITHOUT using quickkeys!!!). Highly recommended. It may not be the fastest, or have every spiffy feature, buts its quite RELIABLE. Something I find convenient when doing those 300k transfers at 2am... -------------------- Ken Wallich *My views are mine, and mine alone* Consultant "Slimey? Mud Hole? my HOME this is!" I am using VersaTerm version 3.10 (Sept 87)by Abelbeck Software. I have not tried all the things it has, but it does the basics. It had not occured to me to try to change the fonts on it, but uupon reading your needs I checked and found that it will do 12 point size instead of what I had been using, so you probably have changed my squinting life.

The window then covers over about a third of my 19" monitor at the default 80x24 window size. The documentation says that you can then enlarge the window to get more lines and columns, but I haven't tried it. As a bonus, you can configure the various text attribute types (i.e., reverse, underline, etc) to be in a different color if you have a color monitor (though it is limited to the original 8 Mac colors). And you get Tek 4015 and 4105 emulation (also in color) plus a DG 200 terminal emulation. There are some problems with VersaTerm Pro though, like you setting the default transfer directory for Mac Xmodem transfer. It is normal set to the folder VersaTerm Pro is in, and you can change it, but only to the top level on of a volume (this is dumb and probably a MFS carryover). Also, even though you can scroll backwards to look at past text, the color information is not retained. All in all, it is a pretty good product, though a bit high in cost.
