[comp.sys.mac] Apple and ROM bugs

osmigo@ut-ngp.UUCP (Ron Morgan) (12/17/87)

Since I'm currently using a new SE and 6.0/4.2, I'm becoming more and more
concerned about Apple's policy with regard to ROM bugs. I understand the
256K ROM's aren't quite totally devoid of such pests. Does Apple have an
official policy for addressing this? Are bugs simply "fixed" in new machines
as they are manufactured? If so, are said fixes available to earlier purcha-
sers? Or, is Apple just piling on patch after patch in new version after
new version of the ever-growing System/Finder?

I think an answer to this question is sorely needed out here.

[ just heard from "official" sources who may not want to be quoted by name:

now what I'd like to know how I can recognize those new machines before
accepting them in exchange for $$$$ !!!

also, there is an *OFFICIAL* Apple policy on upgrading the buggy MacII ROMS:

if you can convince Apple that you are using one of those cards which have
more than 1 Meg of RAM and thus suffer gravely under the bug which recognizes
only 1Meg ...... Apple wil will give you a replacement !!!

call them up, or talk to your dealer and tell them that "YOU ARE SURE ABOUT
THIS"... because I said so !! (-:

I was under the impression that new versions of System replaced the
jump table values in order to fix bugs (for instance, the "2nd drive runs
at half speed" bug in the SE). After all, even bug fixes can have bugs!

Some bugs don't show up for a long while after a machine is released.
There may be more Mac II ROM bugs laying unprovoked (there's not a lot
of software out there). I for one am not adament about getting my Mac
II ROMs fixed -- there may be additional bug fixes in later versions
of the ROMs -- so I'd be wasting everyone's time (including my own)
because I don't absolutely suffer from the Mac II ROM bug at the
moment.

I don't see what your concern is. I thought the amount of RAM used
for patches was trivial.
