[comp.sys.mac] Old FONTs and F/DA mover anomalies

brian@ut-sally.UUCP (Brian H. Powell) (01/01/88)

I'm trying to clean up a font I did in 1984. (By the way, I'm cleaning
it up for the CD-ROM to be put out by Discovery Systems.) "Cleaning up"
means, among other things, changing it from the old "Font Mover" type file
into the newer "Font/DA Mover" type file.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get Font/DA mover to recognize my font.

I tried everything I could think of.
I created a FOND for it. (Following the example of other fonts such as
"Venice", "Geneva" and "New York", most of the entries in the FOND are zero.)
Loading the font into the system with ResEdit seems to work fine. All
programs (besides F/DA mover) can access the font and everything's hunky-dory.
F/DA mover won't even let me move the font out of the system file: the name
just doesn't show up on the list of fonts in "System".
I tried moving additional fonts into the font file. The other fonts are
recognized, but mine isn't.
I tried changing the Font ID into one of the ones reserved for Apple (I
normally use 212, I tried the one reserved for "taliesin": 24.) (I tried
several other font id's also.)
I tried using an (ancient) resource disassembler. I noticed that it
yielded a zero-pt FONT (which didn't show up with ResEdit.) I deleted it and
used the MDS assembler and linker to create a new resource file. It didn't
help.
I looked at the first several bytes of my FONT resource to see if they
looked normal. They did.
I tried editing the font with ResEdit to force ResEdit to write out a new
version of the FONT. That didn't help.

Seriously, Apple, what's the deal? What am I doing wrong?
