[comp.sys.mac] Some questions on Mac vs. PC Pagemaker

peter@aucs.UUCP (Peter Steele) (01/06/88)

We have Pagemaker for the Mac and are considering getting a version
for the PC. Before we lay out any money, however, we'd like to know
a bit about how PC/Pagemaker compares to Mac/Pagemaker. Here are
some specific questions:

1. What hardware/software configuration is needed for Pagemaker (i.e.,
how much memory should the PC have, does it require Windows, etc.)

2. How does it compare to Mac/Pagemaker in performance?

3. How does it compare to Mac/Pagemaker in features?

4. How does it compare to Mac/Pagemaker in usability?

5. What does it cost? Is there an educational price?

That's all. Any comments can be mailed to me at the address below. (If
you're lazy, just post it and I should find it.) Thanx!

IBM PC or compatible is required. You don't need to buy Windows, but
PageMaker on the PC is a windows application (it comes with a Windows
Runtime module, for those that don't have windows).

According to the latest blurb I read from Aldus, the new PC and
MAC versions are identical in features, but I can't speak for the
relative performance (speed) issue.

< 4. How does it compare to Mac/Pagemaker in usability?

Again, the should be the same.

< 5. What does it cost? Is there an educational price?

Don't know, off hand.

I use a Mac se with pagemaker each day putting out our newspaper on saipan. I a
am helping am also helping a frioend with a compueterland AT clone with
640 k - 2 30 meg dh'd and atop-of-the HP printer.

I find Pagemaker operates exactly the same on both machines, with the exception
the PC version is slower in windows.

If it redraws a page in bitmapped (non rez fonts) it is very slow.

Plus we have had a tremendous difficulty in getting gfonts to show up in the
type selection windows.

We have also successfullly transported pagemaker pages from my mac
to his clone over a modem ..... they print well enough, but things like screens
and other goodies tend to be a lot darker on the HP.
