[comp.sys.mac] Versaterm 2.10

buzz@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Mahboud Zabetian) (01/16/88)

I am using Versaterm 2.10. I know there is a new version out, but haven't had
the time to send in my disk.

My question is: When I download, while running under multifinder, the finder
does not recgnize the file attributes of the downloaded file. I get a generic
document icon, and sometimes the file type and creator are incorrect too.

Is this a problem with versaterm? Is there a way to fix it? Is there a way
to get around it, after the download is done?

Thank you.

This sort of thing seems to be a common problem as I have seen reports of
similar behavior with Red Ryder 10.3 running under MultiFinder.

The difficulty occurs when you download a file to a folder that is open on the
Desktop. MultiFinder apparently does not correctly attach the attributes to
a file that is created in this manner (via a download using a term program)
and hence you get the generic icon, etc.

The solution for Red Ryder (and I assume other term programs) is to make sure
that the folder that your new file will be downloaded to is closed when you
see it on the Desktop. You should then find the file in "normal shape" (and
function) when you go to use it.

I fear that I do not know how to recover files that have the problem that you
have noted. Perhaps someone else...

Mahboud,

I have an old copy too (another shipping screwup keeps my upgrade
away, this one Christmas-related). It does the same thing, but there's
an easy fix.

Just do your downloading and finish your session before looking at the
files. It helps to keep the downloads in a closed folder.

Then, quit Versaterm before looking at them. It apparently lacks the
file flush being called, perhaps just for the BNDL resource (also
desktop position) or something, and quitting does the flush.

Then your downloads will be in position, and wearing the right image.

If you want to do more terminal work, then you can fire up Versaterm
again; it's quick.

I imagine it's fixed in the Multifinder-compatible version -- will
post if not, when it finally comes.
