[comp.sys.mac] FullWrite Pro Price/Availability

jasst3@cisunx.UUCP (Jeffrey A. Sullivan) (01/14/88)

Just got the fever for Fullwrite. I read the 3-page ad in the new MacUSer,
and couldn't stop drooling. It sounds like the WP for me.

The question: Is it now available or not?

The second question: How is $169 for it; has anyone seen better?

And now for Fullwrite rumors...

The product will be bought by Ashton Tate.

The copies sold at Macworld will actually be the latest beta version.

Of course all of this is unsubstantiated and potentially untrue, however,
we will know in a day or two, eh?

Well, even as we speak, I have the president of a major Macintosh User's
Group wandering around Mac Expo with $150 (cash) of my money, searching for
a "good deal" on FullWrite. I think $169 is going to be a pretty good
price, but, of course, Expo usually has everything for less.

As to availability, Ann Arbor is keeping it very close to their chest as to
whether they're releasing it at Expo or not. Beta's have been good, but (as
someone pointed out), NO ONE wants another Word 3.0 fiasco, especially at
AA. From the pretty-solid nature of the betas so far, I'd say that if it
misses Expo, it won't be long after that.

I'm getting a chance to ding away at the latest FullWrite beta for a second
evening come Friday; while I want more time on the product before I give a
full-fledged opinion (especially after Word 3.0), I'd have to say that this
is Something Special. A VERY nice user interface (can you say "Non-IBM"?
can you say "integrated"?), excellent features, and decent documentation (an
intro manual and a reference manual that answered all of my questions
quickly, as opposed to the Word 3.0 Reference Manual Shuffle). However, the
User Interface is such that, after the initial introduction to the product,
trips to the reference manual quickly become less frequent, anyway. Perhaps
the best way I can sum it up is that, while FullWrite is a more powerful
program in every way, it is less complex to use.

I've been trying to make a list of things I can do on Word 3.0 that I can't
do (better or at all) in FullWrite, and can come up with only 3 so far, with
only one of them major (and it's rather closely tied in with Word itself)...
but I'll talk about that after I have a chance to chew on it.

A friend said that, after playing with it for several hours, he thought it
was superior as a page layout system to ReadySetGo!4.0; he (unlike me) is
quite familiar with the various systems (he uses them in his work), and felt
that the interface was easier to use.

At any rate, I wouldn't buy a WP (and maybe a page layout system, unless you
need the graphics flexibility of PageMaker) until you've had a chance to
check this thing out. I hope Ann Arbor holds out and gets the thing
completely debugged before releasing it; from everything I can see (and
hear), it's very, very close right now. It ain't vaporware anymore -- it's
almost totally congealed.

Well, the following transaction occurred during the Q&A period
of the FullWrite demo I saw at MacWorld:

	Q:	When will you ship?
	A:	Umm... err... I don't know.

They were, however, distributing demonstration copies, one per
badge.

Rumor also has it that Ann Arbor employees at the show were told
that anyone mentioning a release date would be fired.
