[comp.sys.mac] APDA - MPW - C++ - Modula-2

taube@luth.UUCP (01/15/88)

Saluton!

I have a couple of questions which I hope someone can help me
find answers to:

1) I know that APDA is the sole source for MPW, but do I have
to *join* APDA to be able to get MPW?

2) How much do I have to pay for a membership?

3) How much is MPW?

4) What is the current status of MPW vs C++ vs MacApp?

5) I know of two Modula-2 compilers for MPW, SemperSoft and TML.
Which one do you judge the most powerful/versatile? Why?

6) Address to APDA?

THANKS!!

Yes, you have to join APDA to purchase MPW or any other Apple Developer
Tool. If you are developing for the Macintosh, you really should join APDA.

APDA membership is $20.00 a year. It includes a 'subscription' to
the APDALog.

>3) How much is MPW?

MPW Shell $200.00 (This includes the Assembler)
	MPW C $150.00
	MPW Pascal $150.00
	MacApp $100.00

I don't totally understand this question. Could you develop it some
more and repost it?

There is a compairson of the SemperSoft and TML Modula-2 in the
January 1988 APDALog. I was planning to read it this weekend. Maybe I
can post a report after that.

>6) Address to APDA?

	APDA
	290 SW 43rd St
	Renton, WA 98055

Ok, I'll expand:

I've seen some rumours that there will be a C++ compiler available when
MPW 3.0 hits the streets sometime during 1st quarter. (?) The rumours
also mentioned ongoing work to port MacApp to C++.

The rumours said nothing about whether this would be a complete C++,
or not (some kind of stripped down version ?).

If the above indeed *is* true (with a complete C++), then I see no
reason *not* to impatiently wait for MPW 3.0, and then quickly sell
my dog to *get it* !

:-)

Please enlighten me.

I don't know about the date, but there is a C++ compiler in development.
This is a port of the standard AT&T CFront, with some extensions to support
the Mac. (Apple has defined a subset of C++, which would be the minimal
feature set necessary to use MacApp; our compiler, however, will implement
the full C++.)

MacApp is not being ported to C++. C++ is being made compatible with Object
Pascal. C++ users will link with a pre-compiled version of MacApp. You
will also be able to use C++ to subclass classes written in Object Pascal,
and vice versa.
