I have just acquired a nice new Mac II for use on an educational project. Part of the package is an Apple Extended KeyBoard, and I am curious as to the function of the some of the keys, or the intended function. Out of the fifteen function keys, four are clearly marked "undo", "cut", "copy", and "paste". Three are marked "print screen", "scroll lock", and "pause". Then there are other keys, which I think come also on the regular ADB keyboard: "help/ins", "home", "page up", "end", and "page down". There is also the old "clear" key, same as on my Mac Plus keyboard, only it is also labeled "num lock" now. None of these named keys appears to do anything even remotely connected with the function implied by the name! I thought it was a nice touch to have the "undo", "cut", "copy", and "paste" keys, so I immediately tried them out with the Finder on the names of some document files. No such luck, any function key I pressed when inserting text just caused a '-' to be inserted. Are the names placed on these keys for ornament only? Or are the functions supposed to be user-definable, meaning you have to buy some third-party DA or INIT to make them do anything? Also, in Key Caps when using the System Font every one of the function keys shows a picture of an outline of the Apple symbol, as does Control-P, while Control-T shows the Apple in solid. Is the purpose of the Extended KeyBoard to give users seventeen ways to generate an Apple symbol, and make up for it being nearly impossible to do on earlier keyboards? I suppose I could wait a long time for the answers to these questions, since after almost two years and numerous System/Finder upgrades the "clear" key on my Mac Plus keyboard has yet to "clear" anything! -- ********************************************************************* *Earle R. Intended functions is correct. Although the keys exist, most programs do not support them (yet). If you want to use them for their intended purposes you can either wait for updated versions of the software or you can get a copy of QuickKeys from CE Software. QuickKeys lets you translate any key on the extended keyboard to any other key, to any menu item, to scroll bar mousing, to mouse clicks or any sequence of the above. I've been using it on my Mac II and have had no problems with it. CE Software advertises in most of the Mac mags and they have an 800 number as well. There is a demo version floating around as well. Usual disclaimers apply. |*Earle R. Horton, H.B. 8000, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755 * Jerry Whitnell Lizzi Borden took an axe Communication Solutions, Inc.
