Is X windows available for the Mac ][, running under A/UX ? For that matter, is it available for the IBM PS/2 under OS/2 or possibly under AIX ?

It is available under A/UX as far as I know. What would be even nicer would be to see it running (x windows that is) under the Mac OS. It might even be nicer if some kind sole like oh say THINK converted the X libraries to Lightspeed C. Or perhaps we could make this a network (usenet) effort Or perhaps Apple might let us have access to their Aux X stuff to convert to the Mac OS. any comments? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- David L. X under Mac OS? I am a all for it!

Yes, X.10 exists for the Mac II under A/UX. Some guys at Berkeley have do a first cut port of X. Warning: It is really slow and quite a resource hog. You don't want to run it with less that 5mb or RAM. Then again, A/UX would like about that much memory for itself. (Remember when v7 ran happilly in nothing?) I believe there are plans to do a X.11 prot, and to localize the port to the Nac II hardware, i.e. use the toolbox for graphics. I haven't heard yet how this is coming. I expect that OSU will do it if no one else gets around to it in the next few months. Cheers, Mark

I bought my Mac II essentially to be a UNIX workstation, but I fear the potential for the price to go through the roof. Also, while I am asking A/UX questions, is there any concensus on what disks (emphasis on third party disks) are supported? Finally, rumor has it (from an Apple rep, no less) that A/UX comes with 25 right-to-copy licenses, enforced by the MacHonor(tm);-) system. Any truth to this? Jon Shapiro AT&T Information Systems
