[comp.sys.mac] Excel vs Font/DA Juggler

takahash@bnrmtv.UUCP (Alan Takahashi) (01/29/88)

Try this trick:
Install Font/DA Juggler Plus (not version 2.0) on your hard disk.
  Reboot your system.

  Start up Microsoft Excel v1.04
When the untitled spreadsheet comes up, enter two columns of 10 numbers
Go to the File menu and select New...
Select type "Chart" and click OK
After the chart comes up, go to ANY menu item and click on it

  *CRASH* [ID=02]

So much for the trick. The gist of this is that Microsoft Excel will
crash doing a relatively simple thing. If I were to remove Font/DA
Juggler Plus, Excel will run OK. My system configuration was: System 4.2
with Finder 6.0. System 4.1 with Finder 5.5 does the same thing.

Now, I already know that Excel has some problems with Multifinder. On
the other hand, Font/DA Juggler Plus is a relatively new product (I got
mine at the MacWorld Expo).

Anyone else having problems or any ideas?

I don't really know anything about Excel, but I did try to start it
once with a debugger installed and set to stop whenever someone
patched a Toolbox or OS trap. It turns out that Excel redefines
a lot of the resource-handling functionality of the Mac, which is
exactly what a product like Suitcase has to tinker with. I would
guess that they get in each other's way somehow.

If that's what is happening I can't think of a cure, except perhaps to
buy a spreadsheet from a company that doesn't feel the need to patch
GetResource in an application.
